Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) – State project

Project Overview :

Emmaty, Inc. was proudly contracted by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) to deliver comprehensive accessibility upgrades across multiple public restroom facilities throughout the MBTA system. This initiative was part of a broader commitment to ensure that all transit users–regardless of ability–can access safe, compliant, and user-friendly facilities.

Our team executed work across multiple MBTA locations, focusing on full compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and other applicable building codes. From infrastructure modifications to systems upgrades, this project highlights Emmaty’s capability to manage complex, multi-trade work in high-traffic, public environments.

Key Scope Highlights:

Accessibility Enhancements

  • Installed ADA-compliant fixtures including accessible sinks, toilets, grab bars, and hand dryers.
  • Widened entryways and reconfigured floor plans to improve wheelchair maneuverability.
  • Integrated tactile and Braille signage for visually impaired users.

Tile and Surface Improvements

  • Applied durable, non-slip tile finishes consistent with existing design aesthetics.
  • Sealed all joints and installed smooth wall panels for long-term maintenance and durability.

Toilet Partition Modifications

  • Secured permits, provided fire watch personnel, and ensured availability of suppression equipment on site.

Achievements:

  • The project has maintained a strong safety record with no work-related injuries or illnesses reported on OSHA Forms 300 or 300A.
  • The project showcases Emmaty’s ability to execute technically complex construction within occupied, high-traffic public facilities while adhering to strict compliance standards.

Challenges Addressed:

  • Securing Access to Critical Infrastructure: Overcame restricted access to sensitive areas (e.g., electrical rooms) by developing efficient sequencing and scheduling strategies that minimized disruption.
  • Mitigating Supply Chain Disruptions: Handled material procurement challenges by sourcing alternative suppliers, optimizing lead times, and maintaining schedule integrity despite global supply issues.
  • Managing Evolving Project Scope: Integrated substantial owner-directed scope changes mid-project while maintaining quality standards, controlling costs, and keeping work progressing efficiently.
